Two graduates of the Master in Population Studies program of the UP Population Institute are joining the roster of UPPI alumni pursuing doctoral degrees abroad.

Ms. Anna Amalia B. Vibar moved to Belgium in September 2024 to pursue a PhD in Science at the Department of Geography at the University of Namur. This program aims to strengthen UPPI’s efforts to expand demography and population studies beyond statistics by introducing technical skills such as spatial analysis. Supervised by Dr. Sabine Henry and Dr. Sebastien Dujardin of UNamur and Dr. Jose Andres Ignacio and Dr. Elma P. Laguna of UPPI, her research focuses on developing a dynamic model for mapping social vulnerabilities to climate risks. With over thirteen years of experience working with marginalized communities of farmers and fisherfolks through non-government organizations, Ms. Vibar hopes to turn scientific research into evidence-based decisions that can guide local government actions, ultimately affecting communities positively, particularly those most affected by climate risks.

Meanwhile, Ms. Klarriness P. Tanalgo is set to move to Scotland this month to begin her PhD studies at the University of St Andrews. Under the supervision of Dr. Chia Liu, Ms. Tanalgo will study older-age suicide in East Asia as part of her PhD in Geography. She served as a University Researcher of the Institute and contributed to several projects including the 2021 Young Adult Fertility and Sexuality Study and the 2018 National Migration Survey, among others.

The Institute extends heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to Ms. Tanalgo, Ms. Vibar, and all UPPI graduates pursuing further studies. May this new chapter bring meaningful contributions to their respective fields and to the advancement of demography and population studies in the Philippines.
