UPPI-DRDF present papers at the 2023 PPA Scientific Conference



Faculty members, researchers and students of the UP Population Institute presented their research at the recently concluded 2023 Philippine Population Association Scientific Conference held on April 27 and 28 at the Smallville 21 Hotel in Iloilo City. With the theme, Population Dynamics in the Philippines: Opportunities and Challenges for Sustainable Development, this year’s conference is the first face-to-face event of the PPA since the COVID-19 Pandemic.

UPPI presented and chaired in five out of 10 parallel panel sessions. Most of the research presented highlighted analysis and results of ongoing research projects of the UPPI and DRDF namely: 2021 Young Adult Fertility and Sexuality Study (YAFS5), the Longitudinal Study of Ageing and Health in the Philippines (LSAHP), Gender Disparities in Potential Years of Life Lost in the Philippines, and the Longitudinal Cohort Study of the Filipino Child. The Demographic Research and Development Foundation (DRDF) provided funding for the participation of some of the researchers and students who presented papers.

On the first day of the conference Dr. Kabamalan presented the paper, “Male-Female Disparities Due to Premature Mortality in the Philippines” under the panel session on Mortality while Dr. Elma Laguna presented the paper, “Disrupted Lives, Uneven Education Trajectory: How the Pandemic Affects the Achievement of SDG4” under the panel session, Promotion of human and social development: Children and adolescents I. Dr. Jose Andres F. Ignacio presented a paper entitled “Deriving Geospatial Covariates on Social Infrastructures for LSAHP Data” on the first day of the conference and chaired the session on "Western Visayas Population Scenario".

On the second day of the conference, the panel session entitled “How socially engaged are the older Filipinos? Findings from the LSAHP Wave 1”, organized by the UPPI and DRDF was chaired by the UPPI Director Grace Cruz. Dr. Christian Joy Cruz, presented the paper, “Social Isolation, Loneliness, and Health: Evidence from a Large-Scale Survey”. The rest of the presenters were also UPPI graduates: Dr. Jeofrey Abalos, post-doctoral fellow at the National University of Singapore (Factors Associated with Living Alone Among Older Persons in the Philippines); Asst. Prof. Ruzzel Brian Mallari, Administrator at University of Nueva Caceres- Bataan (Death of a Child and Mental Health and Loneliness of Older Persons) and; Mark Ryan Paguirigan, DRDF Research Analyst, (Long-Term Care Use Among Older Filipinos).

In the session on SDG pillars that was chaired by Dr. Kabamalan, UPPI graduate student, Ms. Lyka T. Manglal-lan presented the initial findings of her paper, “Male and Female Gender Role Attitudes in the Philippines: Is There a Difference?”. Another UPPI graduate student, Ms. Kathleen Faye Lagasca presented a paper, “Determinants of Volunteerism Among Older People Who Are Members of Non-Religious Organizations in the Philippines” which she, together, with Ms. Justine Hidalgo, prepared for one of their demography classes.

In the session on Health and Well Being of the Youth that was chaired by Dr. CJ Cruz, UPPI University Researcher, Ms. Klarriness Tanalgo presented their analysis of the YAFS5 data entitled, “Transitions from Onset to Regular Smoking and Drinking: A Multi-State Approach” and UPPI Senior Research Associate, Ms. Jane Alexandra Siwa, presented her MA thesis, Teen Motherhood, Education, and Employment Outcomes in the Philippines.

Finally, Dr. Laguna facilitated the closing plenary, “Roundtable Discussion on Research experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic” where researchers from UPPI, University of San Carlos-Office of Population Studies Foundation, Research Institute for Mindanao Culture Xavier University - Ateneo de Cagayan and the Institute for Migration and Development Issues talked about the challenges they faced and lessons they learned in the conduct of research during the COVID-19 pandemic. For UPPI, Dr. Kabamalan shared their experience while conducting field work for the YAFS5.

Meanwhile, Dr. CJ Cruz was also elected as new president of the PPA following the PPA general assembly on the first day of conference.
