Dr. Cruz during the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology’s 30th Congregation, 26 November 2022
The UP Population Institute’s (UPPI) ever-growing family welcomes the faculty appointment of Asst. Prof. Christian Joy P. Cruz, on whom was recently conferred the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Public Policy by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), 26 November 2022.
Dr. Cruz earned her Master of Arts in Demography (MADEM) degree from UPPI in 2008. As University Researcher II from 2007 to 2022, she worked on numerous research projects of the Institute and the Demographic Research and Development Foundation, such as the 2018 Longitudinal Study of Ageing and Health in the Philippines (LSAHP), the recent rounds of the Young Adult Fertility and Sexuality Study (YAFS), and the first-ever National Migration Survey (NMS).
Early this year, Dr. Cruz defended her dissertation examining the utility of online surveys for policymaking, specifically the relationships between incentives, response rates, sample representativeness, and data quality. She was supervised by Dr. Stuart Gietel-Basten and Dr. Kira Matus of HKUST.
While working as a Ph.D. student at HKUST, Dr. Cruz co-authored several publications, including peer-reviewed demographic studies on COVID-19 in Hong Kong and ageing in the Philippines. She was also involved in the Hong Kong Generations and Gender Survey (HK-GGS), data from which she used in her dissertation. She also had the opportunity to be a visiting PhD researcher at the Erasmus University Rotterdam in Netherlands and, in May 2022, she was selected to receive the HKUST RedBird Academic Excellence Award for Continuing PhD Students in 2021/22.
Dr. Cruz is currently teaching graduate courses in Demography at the Institute.
