UPPI hosts lecture and workshop on R for Demography of migration expert, Prof. Guy Abel

The UP Population Institute hosted the World Experts Lecture and R for Demography workshop of distinguished migration scholar and demographer, Dr. Guy Abel, Professor at the Shanghai University and Researcher at the Asian Demographic Research Institute, from May 8 to 12, 2023.
On May 8, 2023, Dr. Abel conducted a lecture, “Bilateral international migration flow estimates updated and refined by sex,” where he discussed how he and his co-author, Joel E. Cohen estimated migration flows between and among 200 countries from 1990 to 2020 using six different indirect techniques and found that Pseudo-Bayesian demographic accounting method as the better estimation method for sex-differentiated migration flows. The results of their study revealed a decline of female migration flow from 1990 to 2010 followed by a recovery from 2010 to 2020.
Participants in the lecture came from various academic institutions and government agencies such as the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA), Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS), the Commission on Population and Development (CPD) and the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA). The lecture was live streamed at the UPPI Facebook page.

On the succeeding days, from May 9 to 12, Dr. Abel also led a face-to-face workshop on R for Demography at the UPPI computer rooms. The workshop was intended to train UPPI faculty and staff on how to use R in analyzing demographic data. But apart from UPPI faculty and staff, participants from other academic units/ institutions (Department of Sociology / Xavier University, Cagayan de Oro) and partner agencies (PSA, PIDS, NEDA and POPCOM) also participated. A total of 25 individuals finished the 4-day workshop.
