UPPI receives recognition for External Assessment of MADEM program

The UP Population Institute (UPPI) received recognition from the Quality Assurance Office (QAO) of the University of the Philippines-Diliman (UPD) for successfully completing the External Assessment of the Master of Arts in Demography (MADEM) program late last year.

UPPI was among the four departments in the College of Social Sciences and Philosophy (CSSP) recognized during the “Kahusayan: Seremonya ng Pagkilala sa Kagalingan sa Quality Assurance” held on August 10, 2023 at the College of Science Auditorium, as part of UPD-QAO’s 3rd anniversary celebration. The Department of Linguistics, Department of Political Science, and Department of History were also awarded in the ceremony.

UPPI is the only department in UP Diliman that has conducted an EQA for a graduate degree program in 2022.

Of the several types of external quality assessments (EQA), Type D was applied to the MADEM program wherein two disciplinal assessors from foreign universities and one QA-trained assessor evaluated the program based on the 11 criteria of the ASEAN University Network-Quality Assurance (AUN-QA) Assessment at Programme Level. Renowned demography scholars, Dr. John Casterline, Robert T. Lazarus Professor in Population Studies at the Ohio State University, and Dr. Ann Evans, Dean of Higher Degree Research at the Australian National University served as foreign assessors while CSSP Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Dr. Ruth Lusterio-Rico served as QA-trained assessor. Dr. Casterline was conferred Emeritus title by OSU following his retirement on June 1, 2023.

UPPI has regularly conducted internal assessment and has embarked on several academic program improvement (API) activities with the aim of improving its degree programs. While implementing the recommendations of assessors for the MADEM program, UPPI is also looking at conducting another QA of its other degree offering, the Master in Population Studies (MPOPS) program.
