Ms. Klarriness Tanalgo and Mr. Jeconiah Boongaling with Professor Vladimir Canudas-Romo.
UPPI University Researcher, Ms. Klarriness Tanalgo (MPopS), and Programmer, Mr. Jeconiah Boongaling, participated in the 10th Summer Seminar on Population organized by Korea Statistics (KOSTAT) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Seoul, South Korea.
This year’s seminar ran from July 24 to August 10 and consisted of two face-to-face workshops, one online workshop, and one hybrid plenary session. Ms. Tanalgo and Mr. Boongaling attended the second face-to-face workshop on Standardization and Decomposition with Professor Vladimir Canudas-Romo of the Australian National University as lecturer. The said workshop was held from July 31 to August 4.
Participants learned about the principles behind standardization and decomposition. Kitagawa and Vaupel + Canudas-Romo decomposition methods were introduced and their applications to decomposing mortality, fertility, and other alternative measures were demonstrated with data from the Human Mortality Database and Human Fertility Database. Examples were done using R and RStudio.
These types of workshops on technical demography are much needed by UPPI REPS and Staff especially as the Institute seeks to keep up with the developments in the field and engages in many research projects.
Ms. Tanalgo and Mr. Boongaling obtained support from the REPS Development Fund of the OVCRD and the Admin Development Fund respectively to participate in the workshop. Additional support was also provided by the Demographic Research Development Foundation (DRDF).
