The University of the Philippines Population Institute (UPPI) is delighted to announce the appointment of Associate Professor Elma P. Laguna as the new director of the Institute effective 1 February 2024. She will serve a three-year term in the Directorship for the Institute.

Prior to this post, she held several important positions. Dr. Laguna served as the Academic Program Coordinator of UPPI since 2020. She has been with the Institute since 2014 and has been involved in many research projects, most recently with the Longitudinal Cohort Study on the Filipino Child (LCS) and the 2021 Young Adult Fertility and Sexuality Study (YAFS5).

She earned her doctoral degree in Social Sciences and Economics from the Bremen International Graduate School of Social Sciences in Germany and a master’s degree in Demography from UPPI. With her long experience in the field, she has built a network that has provided the Institute with opportunities both locally and abroad, from conferences and media exposure to forming several partnerships.

Through the leadership of Dr. Laguna, UPPI will continue to advance the field of demography and population studies in the Philippines. She will continue to uphold the Institute’s promise to strive for excellence in teaching, research, and extension service.

Let us all welcome Dr. Laguna with enthusiasm and extend the same support shown to the previous Directors of UPPI over the years.

Congratulations, Dr. Laguna, on your new position!
