UPPI Director is a co-facilitator of the 2024 DHS Fellows Program
Dr. Elma P. Laguna, Director of the UPPI joins Dr. Sara Riese of ICF International and Dr. Azaz bin Sharif of North South University in Bangladesh as co-facilitators of the 2024 DHS Fellows Program. The Fellows Program is an important component of the capacity-strengthening strategy of the Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) Program. It aims to increase the capacity of university faculty from DHS countries to analyze and conduct research using the DHS datasets and to build institutional sustainability for universities to train students and faculty to further analyze DHS data.
Dr. Laguna was a DHS fellow in 2017, together with Dr. Maria Midea Kabamalan and Prof. Maria Paz Marquez. Their research project on traditional contraceptive method use in the Philippines was published in the journal “Studies in Family Planning” in 2018. She also served as a co-facilitator in the 2022 DHS Fellows Program and the data users workshops for researchers from Nepal, Afghanistan, and Myanmar in 2018-2019.
This year’s fellows come from five countries, namely Kenya, Tanzania, Bangladesh, Uganda, and the Philippines. The first data users workshop was held at I’M Hotel in Makati from 28 February to March 7, 2024.
