ABSTRACT OF THE PRE-PRINT RESEARCH PAPER
The Feasibility of Conducting Barangay Level Demographic Study: The Case of Depopulation of Brgy. Putsan in Tiwi, Albay
by Roger Junior C. Colobong, Master in Population Studies (April 2013)
This study aims to determine the feasibility of conducting a demographic analysis at the barangay level using available data sources such as the population census, community-based monitoring system, vital registration system, and the barangay health records. The study used the case of depopulation in barangay Putsan to determine if available data sources are able to provide the needed measures and indicators determining the effects of birth, deaths, and migration in relation to depopulation.
Results of the study show that despite the various sources of data, there are existing gaps in data accessibility, relevance, timeliness, accuracy and comparability of the data sources at the barangay level. In line with this, given the current quality of available data sources conducting a barangay-level demographic data is not yet feasible. Micro-level demographic study can however still be pursued until the Municipal level.
