The UP Population Institute recently conducted two lecture and hands-on training sessions at the UPPI for staff of the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).
The first training held on December 12-14, 2016 was called “Basic Mapping and Advanced Spatial Techniques in QGIS”. For three days, around 20 participants learned the basic input of spatial and non-spatial data into the open GIS software QGIS, visualization, and map-making. Spatial data sampling and buffering were also discussed. The final day involved the crafting and presentation of individual thematic maps.

Meanwhile, the second training named “Training on Techniques of Demographic Analysis” was done on January 9-13, 2017. In the opening program of the training, Assistant National Statistician Minerva P. Esquivias emphasized that the training is in consonance with the PSA’s 2017 theme of “levelling-up”. The five-day activity saw its 21 participants learn about demographic concepts and apply tools and methods to arrive at various demographic measures. Similar to the December training, the last day was dedicated to the presentations of group outputs.
More training activities at the UPPI for PSA staff are forthcoming this year. The UPPI and PSA have been working closely together, with UPPI Faculty serving in several inter-agency committees and technical working groups based at the PSA.
