The UP Population Institute (UPPI) faculty and staff congratulate Dr. Arnisson Andre Ortega on his recent publication of a pathbreaking critique of space and power in the Philippines.

Dr. Andre Arnisson Ortega

“Neoliberalizing Spaces in the Philippines: Suburbanization, Transnational Migration, and Dispossession” (Lexington Books, 2016, 370 pages)"examines the tumultuous geographies of neoliberalization that link suburbanization, transnational mobilities, and accumulation by dispossession. Through an accounting of real estate and new suburban landscapes, it tells of a Filipino transnationalism that engenders a market-based and privatized suburban political economy that reworks socio-spatial relations and class dynamics." The book is the product of nearly four years of work.

Dr. Ortega is Assistant Professor 5 at the UP Population Institute (UPPI). He took up Master of Arts in Demography at the UPPI and followed it up with a Ph.D. in Geography at the University of Washington, Seattle.
